Bali is a land of varied flavours, homegrown spices, ingredients and ways of satisfying hunger. At first we focused on the local warungs (restaurants), because they’re cheap and the food is cooked by locals, often in unbelievable conditions. After a while that changed once we settled in the western area of Canggu, home to CRATE Cafe. It deserves a small plug in return for its exceptional service.
What Crate Cafe is
Friends tipped us off about a place called Crate Cafe, and there’s nothing left for us to do but thank them! The café – or rather a place where you can combine food, work and free time in one – literally radiates positive energy and completely won us over.
The increasingly popular open-space format works here too, so it’s no wonder people keep flowing through.

Where Crate Cafe is
Its great popularity isn’t put off visitors by a location slightly away from the main street, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, which runs through Canggu. The café offers convenient parking right outside, including a bike attendant.
How Crate Cafe works
A varied menu combined with popularity and high demand creates occasional queues, but it’s always worth waiting it out. You order at the till, get a number and then settle either into soft armchairs or, alternatively, onto a wooden whisky crate.

The service is good, fast and attentive. As in every place in Bali, in fact. They take both cash and card. Open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. Opening hours: 6:00 – 16:30
What does the café offer?
The principle Crate Cafe follows is actually so simple that it’s demanding for anyone who can’t make a quick decision. Every dish on offer is the same price, 55,000 IDR, regardless of whether you order meat or not. But you can’t choose badly!

The stars are the salad and smoothie bowls, which are very nourishing and tasty, so you won’t even need lunch. There’s also a range of smoothies, fresh juices, young coconuts and of course COFFEE!
In this area especially, coffee is available almost everywhere. Only a few places can actually make a tasty one, though – and here that goes double!!
The menu – 2019
The place tries to stand out not only through design but also through its menu. The names of the dishes often cause confusion when choosing and scramble your head so much that you don’t know what to order until the last moment. The decision comes almost under pressure at the ordering counter, because there’s no time left. On the other hand, it can all turn into an unplanned culinary experience.

Why visit, and is it worth it?
No word other than YES will do. A lot of music for little money. Above all you’ll take away an experience that makes you feel you can’t leave Bali. These days we think back every day to the times at Crate Cafe when we were enjoying fragrant coffee with one of those incredible dishes. Believe us, when we make ourselves toast with jam or yoghurt with muesli, the urge to go back to that place is stronger still.
Besides this excellent café, the whole island offers plenty of other wonderful places and experiences. We wrote about many of them in a previous article.
